Artist’s statement

Bringing colour into our lives!

I'm a Brighton born artist who's worked with art, design and illustration for over 30 years and am largely self-taught. The desire to create has been within me from when I was a small child and made meticulous hand drawn books for my grandmother.

Early evidence shows that man has always aspired to be creative and add beauty to his world with art, expressing his individuality and imagination, playing and communicating his vision to others using a piece of stone to scratch his drawings onto the walls of his cave. Gradually he developed coloured pigments, which he (or she) applied first with fingers, twigs and then brushes. All over the world, throughout time, creative expression has added beauty to our lives in ways that can be shared to inspire both our own and other souls and connect with each other. Today we're incredibly lucky to have such a wide range of wonderful media, papers, and tools to hand: and our primal instincts still respond to colour in exactly the same way as they always have. In everyday life, we're well aware of the effect of colour … a grey day or a blue sky, a field of lavender or of yellow sunflowers... The 'father of medicine', Hippocrates, used colour extensively to heal, recognising that different colours had different therapeutic effects; male birds are highly coloured to make them sexually appealing to their females; and pink can reduce aggression.

With my colourful pictures I aim simply to cheer up a room - and in so doing I see myself as continuing in a tradition that began with man's history.
